Is sendmail running out of machine resources to retry mail? Or is it
simply incapable of sending email quickly with a large queue? This is
probably an "amazing win" because of the scaling problems that come
free with every copy of sendmail.

If you're not hitting your concurrencyremote, this is a complete
nonissue for you. If it is, and you have jacked up your
concurrencyremote, and you're still hitting concurrencyremote and your
machine still has spare resources, then install another copy of qmail,
and write a wrapper which execs one of the qmail-queues depending on
some criteria. Scale up the number of copies until you run out of
machine resources. Or else install Johannes Erdfelt's big-concurrency
patch.
