Yes, I did have the correct host but maildir was in lower case. changed it
to upper case (i.e. Maildir) and it worked fine. Thanks.

Hi all,

I installed Qmail a few days ago. Now, following the rulez in test.deliver,
i try to send a mail to myself (root). And Qmail doesn't deliver anything.
When I look at the maillog file (pasted below), i see that Qmail considers
root as [EMAIL PROTECTED], and says that the mail isn't local but
remote.
How the hell does that happen ?
why does he says that the mail is coming from [EMAIL PROTECTED] ?
Thanks a lot for your help out there, I keep trying to figure it out.

Peter

Maybe check the contents of files: defaultdomain, defaulthost, me,
plusdomain.
If you still can't solve the problem, write us their contents and what is
the fully qualified domain name of the host. And what is the expected

Hello all

In running OpenLinux 2.2, and using ipchains, is there any optimizations
which could be done with ipchains to speed up pop3/smtp access?

Currently, I am only using two rules for ipchains on all machines
which use ip masq in the office (about 25 or so):

# enable ip forwarding

echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_syncookies

/sbin/ipchains -P forward DENY
/sbin/ipchains -A forward -j MASQ -s 192.168.3.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0

Now, according to my Using Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 book by QUE, it is
recommended that the following optimizations be added:

ipchains -A output -p tcp -d 0/0 80 -t 0x01 0x10
ipchains -A output -p tcp -d 0/0 telnet -t 0x01 0x10
ipchains -A output -p tcp -d 0/0 22 -t 0x01 0x10

(though I deny telnet access to the box, and use ssh 1.2.2x instead) :-)

then a section for maximum reliability for stmp:

ipchains -A output -p tcp -d 0/0 smtp 0x01 0x04

then a section for minimum cost for pop-3

ipchains -A output -p tcp -d 0/0 pop-3 0x01 0x02

Now, will this configuration produce better performance in qmail 1.03, or
can I just ignore what is in this chapter of the book?

I haven't run benchtests or batch test files, but I'm running a
combination of ipchains and squid and using pop3/smtp mail (as are most
folks) and I don't see any appreciable overhead at all. My throughput
actuals seem to be the same as before.

If your smtp and pop3 stuff is slow, I can almost guarantee that the
problem is DNS and not ipchains. How slow is it? If you're talking 30
secs or more, it is most likely a reverse DNS misconfiguration.

I know that removing rcpthosts is a very very bad thing because it opens
the door for spammers to use your server to spam, but I haven't heard HOW
a spammer *finds* such a server to begin with. If one removes rcpthosts,
what are the chances that anyone will find this out? How does any spammer
get such information?

Spammers scan IP ranges looking for open relays. Since there are so
many of them (tens of thousands at last count) the chances that they'll
stumble on yours is low but definitely not zero.

If your host sends out mail, it will almost certainly be robo-probed
by some of the receipient systems. That's pretty rude, but they do it
anyway.

Thanks for the replies.. one other thing I forgot to ask.. how would an
administrator know if his server is being used by a spammer?
By the way, I am not a spammer, just curious about how these things
work. I'm having problemst getting my selective relaying to work and I
might just opt to remove rcpthosts.

Did you read the howto at
http://qmail-docs.surfdirect.com.au/docs/qmail-antirelay.html ?

It really isn't that tough. tcpserver (ucspi-tcp) package is a breeze to
install, but the INSTALL doc that comes with it doesn't explain how to set
up a /etc/tcp.smtp file and make a .cdb file out of it, which is arguably
the most confusing part of it all. The howto above does it step-by-step.

You really don't want to run an open relay. We won't be able to get any
mail from you :)

Is there any way to see these if you don't have XFmail? Would
a preprocessor that converts them into attached inline MIME gifs
be too too too tricky? Procmail rule? Pestering Mozilla.org
wish list to replace the Customizable N-Thing with the X-Face
would result in much greater popularity of X-Faces, re-tacking
them onto messages as a trailing (or leading) inline picture would
work too and wouldn't require changes to MUAs that already can
see inline graphics.

Is there something I have forget to include?
Oh, why I say that qmail doesnt start is because I dont get the qmail-send

SMTP and POP3 daemons i start in /etc/inetd.conf

At least at my mirror in Sweden:

http://www.se.ezmlm.org/ aka http://ezmlm.x42.com/

(And from the frontpage there, you have other mirror pointers)
