Of course it is - just use Unix!
# cd /var/qmail/control
# mkfifo smtpgreeting
# while :; do date > smtpgreeting ; done &
This is probably non-portable - so check the exact syntax
for your system.

I'd suggest this instead:
while :; do date > smtpgreeting.new && mv smtpgreeting smtpgreeting.net; sleep 1 ;
done &

This is the first _working_ suggestion I see.
Stefan: your solution is probably quite portable, but not reliable: it can
cause hanging qmail-smtpd's when 2 of 'm try to read the FIFO at the same
time.

I might be not ``getting'' it, but for the sake of completeness,
Russell, I suppose you meant:
while :; do date > smtpgreeting.new && mv smtpgreeting.new smtpgreeting ; sleep 1 ;
done &

I see.
Besides: why would anyone want to do this in the first place ..?
It's the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol after all (and no, multiline
fortunes do _not_ work ;).

Oh, well, as a suggestion, perhaps, but otherwise it's rather a
botch. Let's try this instead:
# cd /var/qmail/control
# while :; do echo Welcome to `uname -n`, `date` , this mailserver is using qmail

Merry Christmas Chris,
I've a debian 2.0.36 and tried it with 2.2.1 ( the same ).
Only a small installation ( the smallest ~28 MB) with procmail and libc5
(for mcaffee) & libc6 Kernel-source 2.0.36 & 2.2.1
And a running qmail 1.03 without patches!

Okay, I must admit I'm stumped. I've installed Debian 2.1 with a similar
setup to you and everything is working fine. The differences are that I am
using daemontools-0.61 and fastforward-0.51, and I didn't install
checkpassword or the RBL stuff. I also upgraded the kernel to 2.0.38 using
dselect. I used the qmail ids and groups included with debian rather than
those in the INSTALL.ids file. Also, this system is running under vmware,
but that shouldn't make a difference.
If it makes any difference I am running qmail using svscan as described in
"Life with qmail".
Btw, in the next version I'll have configure bail out if it can't find
metamail. There's really no point installing it without metamail.
Here's the output in the log file I got after doing a test:

Anyone else have any ideas?
Chris
Hi,
is ti possible that I need a full version of mcafee ?
I have only the 30 days trial-version is this ok ?
I've tried erverything and I thing the uvscan is ok. It scans all if I wrote
it to the commandline.
The same directory and as the same-user. I wrote the same commad and its
works fine.
Only in the scanmails . Sometimes I change in the scanmialscript the command
to /usr/local/bin/uvscan --secure /usr/home for example workes too. If I put
the -rv the is failed again.
I don't now.
And why a segmentation_fault.
Is it possible that the daemontool are the reason for the fault ?
Carsten

Hi Chris,
it is running.
Thanks, thanks, thanks.
It was my mistake. My startup script was wrong.
I've changed it and it runs. Sorry.
I thank you very much for your help.
At last can you tell me with price the mcafee cost for a university?
And now I wish you a fine last christmas day.

i've set up all the logging scripts the same send qorks smtpd works but
logging for pop3d doesn't..
I does however access the dir and files for the logging as is verified
when i delete the dir and files therein.. because the next time i start
qmail up it rebuilds the dir and the files inside the dir.. ..
pop3d is working fine.. everyons getting their mail.. its simply not
logging..
any suggestions welcome and questions will be answered
Hi there.
I currently set it up like this in /etc/rc.d/init.d/qmail:
supervise /var/lock/qmail-pop3d tcpserver -H -R -v -c100 0 110 \
/var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup yoursite.com /home/vpopmail/bin/vchkpw
/var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d-log1 Maildir 2>&1 | setuser qmaill accustamp | \
setuser qmaill cyclog -s5000000 -n5 /var/log/qmail/qmail-pop3d &
with qmail-pop3d-log1 being a shell script:
#!/bin/sh
logger -p local2.info -t pop3d "$USER logged in from $TCPREMOTEIP
($TCPREMOTEINFO)"
exec /var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d $1
I'm still having problems with logging the username though ($USER doesn't
seem to work).
Anyway, at least connections to the pop3 server are logged.
Any idea for the username logging???
Regards!
