POP password checking

I'm having trouble getting qmail-popd to accept my password.  What could be causing the trouble.  The user is in the assign file and I have run qmail-newu and then restarted qmail.  I've delivered a message to the user for testing, but I can't see anything in that user's directory with ls -al nor can I get in with pop.   Any ideas?
