Compiler bug, maybe? I'm using 2.95.2 now, and it was 2.95.1 that
compiled the checkpw that does this:

Of course, checkpw was compiled on a 32 bit SparcIPX, and is now
running on a 64 bit Ultra 5. I could send the binary to you if you
want (12k), since you're running on a SPARC.
