You can't. There is no 4.0-STABLE release. That's wat 4.0-RELEASE is called RELEASE for. Get 4.0-RELEASE mfsroot and kern disks, FTP-install 4.0-RELEASE, and then cvsup to 4.0-STABLE and make world and install a new kernel.
