This question is related to one asked by Erik Nielsen on Jan 14, 1998,
according to the distribution list archives.

In two separate incidents, we observed erroneous addressing on bounced
messages. I'm not looking for further analysis of the problem, but
rather a confirmatory "sighting in the field" from any of you that
have observed this behavior. If so, how did you rectify the problem?

Briefly, the original sender _is not_ written as the addressee on the
bounced message header. Rather, a valid, but _different_ addressee is
written.

The "duress" scenario occurs when:

* Downstream mail server is unavailable
* Deferred mail messages consume all available space on mail store
  volume
* Additional mail messages arrive and are bounced back to originating
  server
(NOTE: In one case, a 300 MB attachment filled the volume in
  mid-delivery)

We are building a test environment to better characterize this behavior
and will post our results. Anything you can offer as insight would be
helpful. I'm sorry that I can't show you specific messages due to the
sensitive nature of this problem. The behavior, however, is consistent
with my description above.

Thank you,

Brian Murray
