starting qmail w errors

I wanted to start qmail after having typed and analyzed the scripts written in 'life with qmail', but I am receiving hard errors that multilog is not able to access   /var/log/qmail/ /var/log/qmail/smtp   Anybody got an idea to solve that problem? It would be great to make qmail running that day!
