IMHO, since the Return-Path is supposed to be added by the final
transport system that delivers the message to its recipient, it is a
part of the message.

The closest I could get is RFC 822, paragraph 4.3.1. This specifies
the format for emails, and it most definitely includes the Return-Path
section.
