Oups, syslog recreate his log files. Just send
a SIGHUP to your syslogd process.
It is easy to rotate your logs with a script like that :
mv /var/adm/messages /sparespare/messages.<date>
kill -HUP <pid of syslogd>
compress(gzip) /sparespare/messages.<date>
