since you have already gone into qmail-getpw.c, 
play with it a bit more.  what we did was modify
it to exit 111 if a control file exists in /var/qmail/control/...

hmm.  i guess this only works when you know ahead
of time you'll be bring stuff down or have noticed a
major problem occurring.    markd seems to have a
good solution for intermittent NFS problems.
