When you are telling qmail to deliver to alan@localhost, it will again
try to deliver according to your .qmail, i.e. it will again deliver to
alan@localhost, who has a .qmail telling it to deliver to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] you get the idea.
Instead of telling it to deliver to alan@localhost, you need to tell
it which file you want to store the mails in - e.g.
/home/alan/Mailbox, or /mail/alan/Maildir/, or whatever.
