I have managed to convert one of our less used servers from sendmail to
qmail. Very straight forward, no problems to speak of. My next task will be
a server that is handling a few thousand pieces of mail per day. After
that, we will be setting up a brand new system that will replace our main
email server. If I have anything to say about it, sendmail will not be
used.
My question is this. Has anyone put in writing how to configure qmail
analogs of sendmail functions? I am not a trained unix administrator,
merely one who has picked up bits and pieces over the last few years and
has no complete picture of how sendmail works. Our system right now handles
mail for multiple domains, uses /etc/aliases and .forward files, and
supports about 40 majordomo email lists (a couple of those contain almost
30,000 addresses each). We have a few users utilizing pine still, but most
are POP or IMAP.
I will admit to not having read all of the various files that explain
qmail. Frankly, some of what I have read is confusing and makes assumptions
that the reader's level of expertise is higher than mine. I am in the
process of trying to plow through "Life with Qmail". That's what prompted
this email to begin with.
If anyone can point me in the direction of a document that says "in
Sendmail you do this, In Qmail you do this", I will walk away a happy man.
And please, if you have need some specific information on what our current
system does, please do not hesitate to ask.
Thank you.
