No. The only component in a qmail setup that involves identd is
tcpserver (if you're using it), which does ident lookups by default.
Turn this behaviour off by using the -R option to tcpserver. See
the tcpserver man page for more options such as -H and -l that
might be relevant to your setup.
cheers,
Andrew.

Why are you debugging qmail-queue?
And where are you trying to write the log?

Rename qmail-queue to qmail-queue-original. Create a wrapper script
qmail-queue that does the logging and calls qmail-queue-original.
PGP signature
"maildirmake" will create a MailDir formatted directory for mail storage.
If I'm reading the previous post correctly he is talking about a Mailbox
file not MailDir directory.

As I said:
"the user should own the Mailbox file in their directory and the
attributes should be 700 as set my maildirmake."

Yes. When qmail-local delivers to a user, it runs with the uid and gid of that
user.

600, so that the user can read and write the mailbox and nobody else can.

Indeed. User/600. But why would one want to "create" that file?

Hi !
I have done everything that is written in docs. SMTP is working fine when I
telnet to it, but when I try to send it with pine (which is I think only
mail reader think working at this time (when I installed Maildir). Pine
always tells me 'SMTP greeting failure: 421 SMTP connection went away'.
Some background on my system (FreeBSD 4.1, qmail installed, I have my own
IP, my own domain name)...
My system was down for some time, and qmail wasn't working before for some
months now, but I need to get it back. I know I can receive mails ok, I
just can't send them, I even got POP3 to work. Is there a setting for SMTP
server. My provider has one so should I connect to his, or can I have my
own....
Please help,
Andy

as for the sending part, this is a kind of philosophical question.
i know people preferring to let the isp's smptserver do the work (aka
relay),
others (as me) send the mail by their own.
for the receiving part, you need a mx record pointing to your mailserver.

Oh, really? By whose definition? I have the source, and I have the
actual program. I suppose if you're some ESR/RMS fanatic, this does
not comply with your vision of "open source". The source is
available, and by Dan's own words you can do what you like with
it. As far as I am concerned, this meets anyone's definition of
"open source" except a fanatic.
Actually, I can't do what I like with it: I can't modify the sources
and distribute binaries compiled from the modified sources.
I don't think one has to be a fanatic to want to do that; for example,
most vendors of GNU/Linux distributions do it.
Open source software, as defined by
http://www.opensource.org/osd.html
does permit distributing binaries produced from modified code.
Most of Dan's software is not open source, by a reasonable definition.

Raul wasn't talking about using software. He was talking about
obtaining software.

Programs - or rather, algorithms - *are* patentable in the US. You
may think this is a ridiculous idea, and I may agree with you, but
it's true nonetheless.

That's not true. Algorithms are specifically _not_ patentable
in the US. What _is_ patentable is a device consisting of a (any)
computer and an algorithm. It is true that to the non-patent
professional this is the same as patenting the algorithm, but
it is not. If the applicant has not correctly written the claims,
then a specific application of the algorithm might not be covered.
If the claims are too broad, the patent will be re-examined, or
will be held invalid in court.
What remains is that _any_ patent, whether ultimately valid or
not, allows the patent holder to force their competitors to
either stop selling a product, or engage in often lengthy, and
possibly expensive, legal procedures.
The other problems are that the onus for disclosing prior art
lies with the applicant, and that the PTO is only obliged to
search its own databases for possible prior art. As devices
comprising software have only recently become patentable, there
isn't much "official" prior art, and the examiner then relies
on the disclosures made by the applicant. It then becomes
the responsibility of those affected by the patent to use
the courts to invalidate it.
In short, in the current scheme of things, the patent system
favours the big guys with lawyers.
Take care,
Stefaan

I applied the c-client patch but this did not fix the problem. I still get
the same error with Maildir. When I use $HOME/Maildir I just get my old
folders in /mail. ARGH!

Did you recompile?

Not here. pine-4.30-maildir.patch. Works.

Hello,
we recendly had a hard drive crash on a system using qmail. /home and /var
were gone - we restored them from backup. No problem. We then installed a
new hard drive and moved /var and /home over to it. After this, we are
seeing some really strange things going on.
*All* local deliveries result in "temporary_error_on_maildir_delivery" in
the logs. No mail is delivered, and they remain in the queue. All mail dirs
are fine in terms of permissions and contents. We have not touched them.
The *strange* part is: All queued mail is delivered successfully if we
restart qmail! In other words, we can make all mail be delievered within 10
minutes by restarting qmail automatically every 10 minutes.
This is oviously stupid, which is why I am posting this message. Can anyone
think of anything that might cause this strange behavior? Short of totally
re-installing qmail and hoping for the best, what can we do?
Thank you,

This isn't entirely consistent with what you're describing, but the fact that
you backed up and restored /var suggests that you may have screwed up the
permissions on your trigger. See http://web.infoave.net/~dsill/lwq.html#trigger

What _exactly_ do the logs say?
PGP signature
I've installed qmail 1.03 on a FreeBSD 4.2 box. I've installed the
c-client patch for Pine and I'm still unable to get my email using
Pine. Of course it says Maildir is not a selectable folder. So, I've been
using mutt to look in Maildir/new. My Maildir is 700 for permissions.
Here's the main problem. I never get any email in Maildir/new. If I put a
forwarding email in .qmail the email gets forwarded. If I delete .qmail
the mail just sits in the queue and maillog has:
Nov 26 15:53:21 datasphereweb qmail: 975282801.681599 delivery
65: deferral: Unable_to_open_./Maildir:_is_a_directory._(#4.2.1)/
I would guess I'm about this close to getting this working :)

Make sure you start qmail with a default delivery method to ./Maildir/

Hi,
I followed PaulGregg doc, and have setup single UID mail system.
The only problem is , the checkpoppasswd log showing
"checkpoppasswd: POP3 connect from unknown@ []"
"checkpoppasswd: pop3checkpasswd: FAILED: qazaka - no such user from
unknown@"
Supposely, the log should show the IP, not "unknown".
How can i solve it?
Thanks.
