telnet localhost 25 failed!

I did it, .. I blew everything away, and went step by step carefuly with Life with qmail!! but when I had to test the telnet localhost 25 it connects, and gave me this: Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to firegate.hahlabs.com Escape character is '^]'.   and that is it.. if I typed anything it goes nowhere!!   Can someone help!!   thanks.
