Charles and Henning have ably pointed you in the right direction for
using maildirs with mutt. Just as an additional clarification, the
'mbox' variable you are setting above is used when you tell mutt to
create a new mail folder. You might do this by saving a piece of mail to
a non-existent mail folder. Mutt will create a new folder of type $mbox
and save the message in it.
The text should be just 'maildir' or 'mbox', based on the type of folder
you want created.
