you may try to remove the -p (paranoid) from the qmail-smtp script

your pop:
> tcpserver -R -H 0 pop3 /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup ...
your smtp:
> /usr/local/bin/tcpserver -H -R -v -p -x /etc/tcp.smtp.cdb ...
