I run ofmipd on port 587, authenticated by pop-before-smtp (well,
pop-before-submit). It works well, nobody seems to block port 587.
At least not yet. This morning I redid my father's mail setup because
he got DSL from Verizon, who as a "security" measure won't let you
send mail unless it has a bellatlantic.net or verizon.net return address.
