I used the checkpasswd package with modification by Rusell Nelsons package 
(http://qmail.trustno1.net/open-smtp4.tar.gz), I also use the Qmail Single 
UID (http://www.pgregg.com/projects/qmail/singleuid/) to have a heap of 
accounts (with a heap of domains) on a single server so I had to modify the 
checkpassword.c file a bit further.
Hope this is any help, this is the combination that I found was the easiest 
to implement.
