Sorry, me again, I installed version 1.0.10 from the devel page with the same ./configure options but I still have the same problem (invalid login regardless). Configure and compile seem OK (as in previous post).
In the meantime, I also changed the owner of /home/vpopmail and everything in it to vpopmail and the group to vchkpw. That's pretty much how it was before, but now it's 100% sure. Owner and Group have execute permissions on everything.
FYI the owner of all users in /daemons/qmail/user/assign is "89" which matches user vpopmail and group vchkpw ...
