I'm not arguing here, just expressing my ignorance... Why?

I currently use things like
|/usr/local/bin/spamc | /home/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail ''
/home/vpopmail/domains/example.com/username

in my .qmail-user files, when i do not want spamc to be invoked for each
user in the domain....

and similarly, sometimes i have the above command in my .qmail-default file,
and also put it in the .qmail-user files for when
the end user wants to create aliases...
(so instead of the .qmail-user file reading
"/home/vpopmail/domains/example.com/username/Maildir/", it reads
"/usr/local/bin/spamc | /home/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail ''
/home/vpopmail/domains/example.com/username"

Some documentation (somewhere, at some time) said to never write to Maildirs
that are using maildir++ quotas without vdelivermail -- have I
mis-understood? If I do not use vdelivermail inside the .qmail-user files,
will this not screw up my Maildir++ quotas?

What is the recommended way for me to be providing the end-solution that i'm
providing?
