I cannot comment about the current version's Makefile, but I have qmailadmin
as:
-rwsr-sr-x 1 vpopmail vchkpw 403406 Aug 11 08:44 qmailadmin
and it works just fine. It shouldn't be a problem to manually change it.

Well, haven't we achieved a lot since the Eniac! I abuse Linux by
calling it Vile Idiot in unix jargon. It then replies by insulting
me on the anatomy of my spine and refuses to talk any longer ...
(True story, though of a lost source.)
