The only alternatives I have experience with are PHP/IMAP based.
Courier-IMAP (http://www.inter7.com/courierimap) has worked great for me,
and I recommend it.

For my webmail customers, I use IMP (http://horde.org/imp). It works great,
but you need PHP compiled with IMAP support. You may want to try
SquirrelMail (http://squirrelmail.org). It's a bit younger than IMP, but
has a neat plug-in architecture and user configurable themes. It's also
written in PHP, but uses it's own IMAP functions, so you don't need to
compile PHP with IMAP support. They're very big on it working "out of the
box". And it's REALLY easy to configure via a menu driven perl program.

Hope this helps.
