Tim, thank you for your thoughts. The only reason I thought that vpopmail might be
running is its presence in /home/vpopmail and this file at /var/qmail/users/assign:

However, as I said, /home/vpopmail/domains/ is empty.
The output of qmail-showctl is pasted in at the end of the message. Note that the host
overall is set up as virtual.jhuccp.org, but that at the end it does identify
africaalive.org as a virtual domain. In the DNS, africaalive.org points to this host's
IP address.
Of more interest might be /var/log/mail. Here's a few lines from just a little while
ago:

In the first entry, "jdelaney" is my coworker who's now getting the messages, but her
real address would be "@jhuccp.org" rather than "@africaalive.org", which is what the
original poster sent the email to.
The third line is obviously a failure. But, does the fifth line indicate that the
message bounced back to the original sender? Up until about a week ago, messages to
africaalive.org were going through correctly. Now however, on one occasion I got the
message "Transcript of session follows: africaalive.org 450 Host down." I don't know
if other messages are bouncing.

I seriously doubt this machine is running vpopmail, maybe it did at one time
but not now.
What is the output of /var/qmail/bin/qmail-showctl
Or better still what do some logs say about deliverys?
