I pressume that freshclam does this automatically. But, before I
configure it to run under my own cron job script, it doesn't update the
latest database for me, and so I use the script and configure it under
my cron job, and it's running well :-)

Freshclam does this for you automatically via a cron job.
Check /var/logs/clamav to see the update pattern.
