default install deletes at 12. this is controlled by
/var/qmail/control/simcontrol. i have changed 12 to 6 on my toaster.
cuts out most of the nastiest spam. i also use rules-du-jour and their
safe rulesets from the sare ninjas (google it) and jakes ruleset to help
mark spam more effectively. i also have made my blacklist to match jakes
(check his site). my company's mail has to work, so i cannot get too
aggresive. on a personal toaster, i woud ramp those measures up, but that
is not in the cards at the moment. spam control is the most difficult to
grasp, because they are so adaptive, and so merciless. you can struggle
to keep them at bay, but this is not a winnable fight, imho.

virus-laden emails will not be delivered on your toaster, nor will the
intended 'victim' know of the attempt.
it is as if a virus-mail knocks on the front door, the bouncer (clamav)
greets virus-mail, determines he is a ne'erdowell, and opens the trapdoor
underneath, sending virus-mail off to the abyss. yay! this is one fight
you can win with your toaster.
you can verify this by checking the log at /var/log/qmail/smtp...i use the
qmlog script to make things human-readable. find qmlog on the wiki or on
jakes site. i see 10-15 rejections a day (bagel, i think) for a small
company with 17 email accounts/forwards. i was using a hoster that was
supposed to be a-v scanning and i was still getting warnings client-side.
now that i am toasting...all quiet on the western front.
