It started happening whilst I was working
on beefing up the spam.. and I installed a ruleset that slowed my
computer to a crawl, causing me to have to reboot 3 times before I
finally pinpoited which ruleset it was. After I removed it , I started
getting duplicate emails.

Usually when you get duplicates, it's because the system is running
slow. If the daemon does not get a "message sent" code back, it assumes
the message got lost somewhere and resends it. You may look to see your
CPU loads when the condition occurs. It's probably hanging in the
spamassassin process somewhere but I've also seen this when IMAP wasn't
working correctly.
