Smells like dns to me too. But not usually for pop3. You say this is on
a local lan. Can you resolve to the servername quickly? Maybe put a test
line in your host file if not?

I had similar problem when pop3 server did reverse DNS lookup of
clients. But i was using qmailpopper at the time and i am not sure if
this is issue with your qmail-pop3. You might want to check that out.
Also, check if you ident is up or down just to be sure. If i remember
anything else i will let you know.
