I'm still on the fence with greylisting. I've talked with a few folks
about it, and am inclined to think that it is more appropriately
implemented in a firewall, if at all.
I'm interested to know what some of our more seasoned email admins
think about this.
RDJ updates the SARE rules that you specify. I included a good general
range of rules for it to update in the config, but you should really go
to their site and browse through their list and decide what is best for
you. I tried to stay as "easy" on the rules as they allowed. I did not
select any rules that provided false positives.
MailScanner looks to be another mail scanning program; much like
simscan. From my brief glance at the docs online (don't want to buy
their $40 book), it looks like it still relies on SpamAssassin to look
for spam, and a virus scanner to look for emails. I may have read this
wrong, though.
It looks (IMHO) like this is an easy way for Exim/Postfix users to get a
spam scanner thrown in quickly and easily.
Crispin - you had asked about greylisting. It has been talked about a
bit on the list here, but it is probably never going to be a part of the
official package. There's too many pitfalls that can cause mail not be
delivered. Toaster was designed to be installed quickly, and just work.
Everyone wanted to make sure that you got your mail, period.
There is a package that someone got to work off the list that required a
user to reply to a message before they got added to the whitelist, or
their email actually made it to the recipient, but I have not used it
myself. With the extra spam rules, Rules du Jour, some modified scoring,
Pyzor, DCC and some domains added to my whitelist I get 2-3 spam
messages a day delivered to my account, with 178 being bounced because
of spam scoring. While those 2-3 are very annoying, I can deal with it.
