the only issue with manually upgrading the packages that i have
encountered is with spamassassin. with spamassassin, the last time i
rebuilt the package i had to make sure my qmail was stopped and no
spamd process was running for it to compile correctly. (if the version
in the e-mail header did not update after cdb rebuild, then the
compile was not clean)

Is it necessary, or just a precaution?
Did someone have an issue that it apparently resolved?
