day to day user and experience.

Note sure which stats you are looking for , but I have a mail server on
a PIII Celeron ~1.3 Ghz with 512MB of ram. I have about 100 users on
it. I don't have anything special on the box, besides a few RBL's and
some extra sa rules. The box stays about 75% utilized mostly b/c of SA,
SA can be very demanding when it gets hit hard. But it doesn't use any
swap.
If I were to spec out a new machine, I would go with a machine that
could be upgraded easily. So I would start with either a Socket F, (or
a socket 940 if you want to save some money). Through some low end
opterons in it, with 1 GB of ram (2x512). Ram being as cheap as it it,
it wouldn't hurt to do 2x1GB. And Then I would grab 2x36 or 2x74 GB
raptors for the main OS, and then probably 2x150 Raptors for mail
storage. I have 50 users, and they are barely using 10GB of storage b/c
most use pop3. As for the processors and motherboard, I would get a
dual socket motherboard, as they are only an extra 75 - 100 bucks, and
then get a cheap processor to drop in it. If you go with a socket 940
you can get two single core opterons for about 200 bucks / pr. If you
go with Socket F it will be a bit more money, but it will be a Dual Core
opteron, so you could only put one in for right now, and have 2 cores,
and then move to 4 cores with an easy purchase of another one.
If you decided to go with a dual socket board, and only one cpu, make
sure to read up about how it will effect the how memory is configured
(normally on a dual socket board you need to have memory must be
installed in pairs, one stick on each cpu, not sure about a single cpu
as I've never done that)
But I would defiantly go with a semi new arch. that leave you plenty of
room to upgrade. I believe I dual socket single core opteron setup on a
socket 940 paltform, with a pedastal case, 2GB of ram and the HDD I
mentioned would be get well past 250 probably well past 1000 users, and
then an upgrade to dual core socket 940 cpus would be much more. I
think at about 500 users the bottlenech will start becoming the HDD
rather than the cpu. I think such a setup could be had for about $1500
USD. $250 per 150GB raptor, $150 per 74GB raptor. $250 for ram, $250 /
pr cpu's, $250 Motherboard, then just a case and powersupply. I would
do linux software raid 1 right now.
Hopefully that helps some, and that is what I would do. If you want
