Yes you're right about performance on the default settings. but if you have a fast server (dual) with a large base memory and define a small strip for the RAID the performance hit is not so high.

yes it is possible to boot from software raid 5 (by making boot partition raid 1 and other partitions raid 5). but i don't recommend raid 5 for mailservers. Performance hit seems to be too big. Switched from raid 5 to 10 and performance boost is noticeable.
