Rejoice!
I'd remove whatever other nameserver you had in there that was giving
you a problem. It was probably timing out, which was causing your delay.
To check a nameserver's performance, you can
# dig @ip.address.of.nameserver some.domain.com
and see what it says. See the man page for dig for all the options.

Sounds like the list name server is having an issue of some sort. You
can verify that with the dig command if you'd like.
I list the local name server first. See if that doesn't fix you up.
