I have been afraid to do the qtp-newmodel because it is telling me I
need to upgrade my os package. It is currently centos 4.3

Just out of curiosity, have you run qtp-install-sanesecurity? The
sanesecurity add-on for clamav is supposed to filter that sort of
thing. Just wondering if it might actually be working. I have it
installed, and haven't noticed any phishing emails.
