We have also noticed the same thing happening on our qmailtoaster
server. Some mail comes through with a delay varying from minutes to a
few days.
I usually use the squirrelmail webmail to view the mail and it shows the
message was delayed because it gives the time the message was really
sent, but puts it in the order of when it was received. For example, I
receive a message from yesterday but it shows up today (with yesterday's
day and time) in the middle of other current emails from today (I
normally have my emails sorted by date with the most recent emails at
the top).

Keep in mind that the sent time is determined by the sender's pc time. If the clock is (way) off in their PC, this can be what you're seeing. The message headers will show when the message was actually sent and passed through the various servers involved.

I understand from the comment below that we can re-order/re-sort the
mail by clicking on the date in squirrelmail. But my real question is
how can I troubleshoot to determine what is delaying receipt of the mail
and how can I correct it?

You'll need to look through the smtp logs to find the messages that correspond to the email in question. qmlog is a useful tool for doing this. qmlog lets you search by whatever you like. I would use the -lc (log contains) option.

This mail is NOT from new senders, so it is not the delay of Spamdyke.
The same sender's mail is not always delayed. The amount of the delay
for various emails can vary for the same sender as well.
Thanks in advance for any help in troubleshooting this.

The smtp log messages will show when exactly messages from the sender actually arrived. You can use the subject line to match up multiple messages from the same sender. The log messages will also show whether or not spamdyke graylisted them.

HTH.
Please keep us posted on what you determine.
