You should be able to send to local domains without authenticating. This
is normal. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to receive email from
external domains.
There are various online tools available to check your server to see if
it's an open relay or not. http://www.checkor.com/ is one, or you can
google for others.
It would be nice to have a page on the wiki that lists resources such as
this. Do we have such a thing yet?
