Gateway2 basically takes the mail if Gateway1 is down for some reason.
So gateway2 is a standby machine when Gateway1 is active and production?
I think that will be useless, as the machine is powered but won't
processing any messages
my suggestion to you if you have many machines why dont you make
clustered QMT so you use all of them works together reducing load.
here is my configuration.

M1 and M2 is the MX, webmail and POP3/Imap server, while S1 and S2 is
SMTP server which only serve internal network, much less spam filter
even spamdyke not installed.
Data1 is only storing vpopmail database, vpopmail mailbox, but you can
also set it as SA server, so both M1/M2 has the same bayes database.
you can also setup HA and DRDB for Data1 to Data2 for cluster/redudancy
