On our CentOS5 server we are using just logrotate:

[root@mail ~]# cat /etc/logrotate.d/dovecot
# dovecot SIGUSR1: Re-opens the log files.
/var/log/dovecot.log {
  missingok
  notifempty
  delaycompress
  sharedscripts
  postrotate
    /bin/kill -USR1 `cat /var/run/dovecot/master.pid 2>/dev/null` 2>
/dev/null || true
  endscript
}

Seems to be working ok.
