Greetings all...

I have for many years lamented that received e-mails show the original date/time from the SENDER, as this allows malicious senders (SPAMMERS) to mess with these values to make messages appear in the far-flung future (or distant past) in an attempt to make their messages stand out.

It was always just an annoyance for me (like the other day when I couldn't seem to find this unread message in my inbox & it turned out to be dated in 1970! SPAM, naturally, and I removed it without opening -- but the mere fact that I had to search and search to remove an advertisement for enlargement pills is an annoyance).

But today, a client asked if there was anything I could do about this same issue... and I said I'd look into it.... so here's my shot in the dark...

Does anyone know of a method of replacing the DATE: field in the msg header with the RECEIVED date/time?

My initial questions/thoughts on the matter include:
- Won't that break signatures? (NO, message headers are messed with throughout the transit process. Neither PGP nor DKIM should break from this) - Aren't you just supposed to ADD to the header, not modify it? (True, but SpamAssassin inserts the SPAM flag into the subject... why would this be different) - Yes, but SA just adds to the Subject line -- you're proposing to change an important data field... That is just an Implementation detail - just insert something in front of the "^Date:" line ... like changing it to "^SENDER-Date:"... and then insert a proper "^Date:" with the data from the receiving server... that should be fine! - Comment: You'd want to do this only as a part of qmail-local so that you only modify LOCALLY delivered messages

Looking forward to any suggestions...
