Looks like you did pretty well on your own. ;) Sometimes one simply
needs a sounding board.
I'm curious though. Was this qmail-pop3d or dovecot? The error doesn't
seem to be related to your solution.
Also, please give example of what you changed in hosts file.

I am getting the following error.

When I checked the directory for $HOME/Maildir, its present there.
All users those configured in outlook as pop. IMAP and webmail is
working fine.
