Please tell us something about the installation. Is the dovecot-server within
the same network as the clients? I understood, you have one Outlook holding
more than hundred mailboxes? Or are there more installations having only one
ore some mailboxes?

I suppose, you have a networking problem somewhere between your server and the
clients. Defective routers/switches/NICs can cause strange problems.

Have you tried setting up a different client,

eg: thunderbird,
see if you get the same results.?

How many imap users do you have?
Have you added a value for mail_max_userip_connections in your
/etc/dovecot/local.conf file? What value do you have?
Did you restart dovecot after changing dovecot settings? (qmailctl
        doesn't do anything with dovecot)
