It seems to have gone crazy recently. fail2ban banned more than 120 hosts already today. Spammer's have always followed the rule "If it doesn't work, do it MORE!", but this seems extreme even by that metric. Mind you, if you're accustomed to accepting a 0.0000001% success rate, then I suppose SMTP password guessing makes sense. But I'm still betting that if each of their robots gets three attempts every 24 hours before my robots shut them down, it'll be a long long long time before they successfully guess any passwords for accounts that don't exist on my server anyway.
