I have an associate with Outlook'07 who's trying to connect to a COS6 build of QMT. It's authenticating fine with dovecot using digest-md5, but authentication to qmail-smtpd (submission port) fails.

Both connections are successfully using TLS.

I just tested SM with cram-md5, and that works ok.

Only thing I can figure is that O'07 is trying to use the same (digest-md5) method on smtp as it used on imap. O'03 has a setting to use the same values for smtp as for imap, but I thought that was only for user name and password, and I'm not sure that even exists any more in O'07.

Any idea why this might be failing?

I'm about to put spamdyke on the submission port so I can capture a log and see what O's really trying to do.

In the meanwhile, I just discovered that the qmail-auth patch that QMT has (incorporated into a single patch file with a bunch of other patches) is version 0.5.7 dated 1/23/05, while the current version is 0.8.1 dated 3/24/13. Marvelous.

Trying to patch the consolidated patch file would be no walk in the park. (Reminder to developers: do NOT consolidate patches.) I think it's time to let the new spamdyke 5.x handle authentication (which has been the plan for a while, just waiting for spamdyke 5.x to settle in).

Once that's implemented, I'll see about removing the smtp-auth patch from qmail. This will allow a stock configuration that prohibits authentication on port 25, as Dan so rightly recommends.

Anyone have any thoughts about this?

Thanks.
