But only if your browser supports it, but this is currently not the
problem. You could even your the dynamic comprssion (deflate/gzip)
of your browser. But for static files it is also possible to use
the .gz file.
small note: this does not work locally. You need a apache how
support this and inform the browser that this is compressed content.
