In IE, you have to put paranthesis around your value:
var abc = eval("(" + evt.getData().getContent() + ")");
Don't ask why, it's IE ;-)
I use it this way and it works perfectly for me.
In my application evt.getData().getContent() is a JS data structure like:
{ bla:12, blubb:{x:"abc", x:"asdkjh"} }
