I'll try the trick with centering and see how that works. But I have to disagree with you on the Modal windows. The only requirement to be modal is that focus can not be given to any object except the modal window. If it did not have a close box there would be no way to close the window except via a button inside the window. That would not work. If you create a modal dialog in IE using window.showModalDialog you will see that there is a close button that allows you to close the window.
I looked through the source and there are quite a few places that need to be patched. Once I get some time I'll give it a go but right now I have bigger fish to fry.

Maybe the problem with setCentered is that it needs the dimensions of
the window. Could work better if you open the window first, flush the
queues and center it afterwards.

The Close-Button is always disabled in modal windows. We thought about
typical dialog windows where the close button is also disabled. You are
invited to submit a patch to change the current behavior, because there
a probably some cases you want to have a close button on modal dialogs, too.
