Hi Andreas,

ok, maybe I was a bit too quick to complain about the wrong thing, because I was frustrated. Sorry.

What I meant was a svn checkout from "trunk" - and even it is not worth your time or mine to find out what exactly happped, my 0.5.x checkout from a some did not complain about the "key" attribute and showed a nice shortcut hint in the menuBarButton. No idea how this can be if it is like you're saying. But it must be my mistake. The problem was that the whole application stopped working with the new update. But the reason was probably a different one, and that can always happen with a CVS/SVN snapshot.

But even if I was wrong about the particular example, I would still maintain that keeping backward compatibility as much as it is meaningfully possible is a valuable goal. I have upgraded my dojo library continually and never had to change a single line of code, even though they changed the code alot internally.

However the problem with compatibility is in my opinion, that sometimes this bloats the API and slows it down. If we really support older API versions sometimes, we should remove this compatibility after a while. And this is hard to manage quite good I think.

Seems to me that when qooxdoo 1.0 is released would be the time to start really worrying about maintaining backwards compatibility for future releases (at least until v2.0 comes out). For those of us using, or considering using qooxdoo for real work at the moment, having to do re-writes of code to take advantage of the newer releases improvements, is just part of the game!

Although I'm just a bit of a lurker on this list & don't (yet) have anything to contribute, I must say that I find the entire project, its organization, atmosphere and results to be quite impressive! Looking forward to using this one day in the not to distant future.

Keep up the great work gang!
