I'm glad to know that there are more features that are going to be added, I'll be happy to put them through their paces. But, I really hope that I don't have to look to the renderer to make visual changes, I'm hoping to simply set properties of the table to make my changes. If the table then has to communicate to the rederers (under the sheets) to make those changes, no skin off my back.

You're right: The user should not be bothered with internal details. The
header is one of these details. I think this special problem is just the
result of a misunderstanding: The header is NOT the one who defines the
look of header. This is done by the HeaderCellRenderer. The header just
manages the raw header cells and mouse events.

It is just not yet implemented that the header asks its renderers how
high they are. Thus - when the table gets stable - no one will have to
deal directly with the header any more. In a future version you will be
able to set the appearance directly in the renderer.
