I have also looked at the "cometd" technology. Seems to be very well thought out but adds too much overhead in my book. It seems to be easier to implement some kind of polling or piggybacking on the requests that are going on anyhow. That is how I am thinking about an event transport from server to client. Of course, this is not "real time". But unless you want to do a chat application, having a 10 second latency, for example, seems to be acceptable.
