Hello Charles, I do not remember exactly but I suppose that the reason for this trick is related to a problem with layouts (unfortunately they are imperfect in qooxdoo 0.7). I ran across a similar problem when I began working with qooxdoo and somebody pointed me to the trick (or I found info about the trick somewhere).
